”EUROB@SE”- a school project

In the school year 2004/2005 a group of pupils and teachers from the Economic-Gastronomic School Complex in Cieszyn and from Lycee Professionnel in Mâcon (France) realised a project called “Eurob@se.” The project was realised in the scope of Socrates-Comenius and it was directed towards learning professions from the service sector in Poland and France as well as their evolution in Europe. The aim of the project was pushing pupils into action in the field of economy and new labour markets. This project allowed young people develop their own initiative and creativity as well as the sense and the patriotic attitude of being a European. It also brought many opportunities to polish their language skills and to learn about new information technologies. This co-operation allowed pupils to become more integrated in cultural, organisational, social and economic manner.

The main goal of this project was creating a website http://lyc71-dumaine.ac-dijon.fr/eurobase/index.html. After three years of creating and updating the website, it was supposed to constitute a complete database of information concerning the partnership schools, forms of education, history of the country, European and national institutions, and professions typical for the service sector in a given country.

Unfortunately, due to withdrawal of the Portuguese school, the project was suspended.

During the realisation of this project we expected to perform several working visits. From 31.03 to 06.04.2005 six pupils and teachers from the Economic-Gastronomic School Complex took a trip to France. In April (22-26 Apr. 2006) the visit was returned by a group of pupils and teachers from Lycée Professionnel in Mâcon (France), who came to Cieszyn. These meetings helped both groups get to know better, find out about schools, cities, local cuisine and characteristics of a given region. We visited the partnership school and we could compare it with ours. We also took part in multimedia workshops, where the Polish pupils presented their school and their country, and the working language was of course English. Teachers, on the other hand, worked on the balance of common activities and planned further co-operation. We could also exchange our knowledge and experiences concerning realisation of the project.

The French also got to know our school, city and the area we live in. They met the mayor of Cieszyn and they took part in Fair of Simulation Companies (from Poland and the Czech Republic). We also organised their short visit in a school in Czech Cieszyn as well as a working meeting. During this meeting the French presented their region, the city and the school. We exchanged materials we had gathered by that time.

I believe that this one year-long realisation of the project made both, teachers and students realise the importance of our language skills and how vital new information technologies are. We also learned to appreciate the meaning of individual and team work in our own school and beyond it.
